Conducting Brief Interventions with Students

The Brief Intervention (BI) is a key part of the SBIRT process and should be delivered to all students, INDEPENDENTLY of their screening score.

Both the BNI and REACT models use motivational interviewing to guide supportive and student-centered conversations. Choosing the right approach depends on how the student screens:

BNI (Brief Negotiated Interview) is used for students who screen positive, and follows five key steps:

  • Build rapport and raise the topic

  • Explore pros and cons of use

  • Provide personalized feedback on risks (elicit, provide, elicit)

  • Build readiness to change by discussing motivation (ex. use readiness ruler)

  • Negotiate a plan for change and next steps

REACT is designed for students who screen negative. It is a simple, strengths-based approach that:

  • Reinforces healthy choices by learning the student’s reasons for not using and affirming them

  • Educates about risks of using and checks their understanding through open conversation

  • Anticipates future challenges by talking through situations where the student might face pressure to use
